Happy Earth Day!
As much as we talk about what the US isn't doing environmentally, today they are celebrating the 36th annual Earth Day. I haven't heard of anything similar in Europe... Is this true? If so, then why not? ...the tulips are definitely having a party.

I just saw a CNN reporter mention 3 things you could do at home to save the Earth. Number three on the list was to charge your ipod or mobile phone with a solar charger. Although this is a nice gadget and even practical in remote areas it certainly not a good thing from an environmental point of view, given that a continuously used panel has an energy pay back time of several years. Interesting example of what happens if you forget life cycle thinking !
Oh please! 'Earth Day'. Just a little bit of pr spin to make people feel better about plundering the earth's resources the other 364 days of the year...
Europe has emissions targets which are infinitely more useful (and sincere...)
;-) Great site by the way... 'cuse the opinions...
yeah, so the whole "charge your ipod with a solar panel" advice is a little embarassing especially from an organization as large as CNN. That segment probably passed through a few editors who weren't even aware of the implications.
As for the pr spin, that's definitely happening, but if you look at the core people organizing events around the US, it's still the local environmental activists. This day is a great opportunity for them to connect to people and show them what their plundering of resources is actually doing. While the message tends to get a little scrambled at the national level, it's more clear when you go to your local celebration and talk to those at the grass roots level who are the ones pushing for all those emissions standards, etc.
